Memphis Depay is grateful that he was able to make his official comeback on Friday evening in the lost Coupe de la Ligue final against Paris Saint-Germain. The striker of Olympique Lyon was out of circulation for months due to a serious knee injury.
"I got injured in December, but I can now say that I came back stronger. That is why I want to thank everyone who played a role in my rehabilitation," Memphis wrote on Instagram after the final on Friday evening.
"From the doctor who operated on me, to Fysiomed Amsterdam, Olympique Lyon and national coach Ronald Koeman, who continued to support me. The people who visited me in Rome (there was surgery on Memphis, ed.) Know that they are in my heart."
The 26-year-old Memphis tore his cruciate ligament in the home game with Stade Rennes in December, an injury that would take six to nine months to recover from. The striker of the Dutch national team worked hard during his rehabilitation and even tried to reach the European Championship, which was eventually postponed to 2021 due to the corona crisis.

"This defeat hurts"
In the Coupe de la Ligue final, it still came from an official return and Memphis immediately returned to the base. The Lyon captain was substituted for Karl Toko Ekambi after eighty minutes and thus no longer experienced the decisive penalty shootout, which was necessary because there was still no goal after 120 minutes.
The first ten penalties were all hit, after which Bertrand Traoré (ex-Vitesse and Ajax) missed the sixth penalty from Lyon. Substitute Pablo Sarabia then hit the decisive penalty kick, so that PSG also won the second cup tournament in France after the league title and the Coupe de France.
"This hurts, but this season is not over yet," Memphis writes in his Instagram post, referring to the return against Juventus in the eighth finals of the Champions League. "Another important game is coming and then we have to be ready."
Olympique Lyon won the first meeting with Juventus 1-0 at the end of February and therefore has a good starting position for the return, which will be played in Turin next Friday. The winner can go to Lisbon, where the Champions League will be completed in tournament form this month.
