Alex Dupont, who was notably the coach of Gueugnon who won the Coupe de la Ligue in 2000, died of a heart attack on the night of Friday to Saturday at the age of 66, announced his former club, the 'USL Dunkirk, in a press release. The death of this former midfielder, who was also the coach of Brest and Sedan, occurred at his home in La Turbie (Alpes-Maritimes), according to the regional daily Voix du Nord which revealed the information.

Winner of the Coupe de la Ligue with Gueugnon

Born in Dunkirk, a club where he will spend most of his playing career and his debut on the bench, Dupont had his greatest success in the 1999/2000 season. At the head of Gueugnon, then in D2, he had won the Coupe de la Ligue at the expense of PSG (2-0), qualifying his team for the UEFA Cup: a unique feat in the history of a competition which, ironically, had its last edition on Friday evening.

He then coached Sedan, which he also had via the championship qualified for the UEFA Cup, Laval, Amiens, the United Arab Emirates' hopeful selection but also Brest. At the head of the Breton club when it rose to the top in 2010, he was voted best coach in Ligue 2 during the UNFP trophies and ensured the maintenance of Brest the following season. After a short stint with AC Ajaccio, it was again in Brest that he ended his coaching career during the 2015/16 season.
