Gonzalo Marín Pérez , father of the badminton Olympic champion Carolina Marín , died early on Sunday as a result of the aftermath left by an accident suffered on February 14.

The Spanish Badminton Federation (FESBA) reported in a statement that Marín died after "a long period of struggle" in which "he was unable to overcome the consequences" of the aforementioned accident.

Last February Carolina moved urgently to Huelva after her father suffered a fall at work, which is why he was hospitalized in a health center in the Huelva capital and later operated on.

Gonzalo Marín was a native of Santa Bárbara de Casa (Huelva), whose sports hall is named after Carolina, and worked in a company dedicated to supplying office supplies. He has always been supporting his daughter in her sports career and accompanied her from the stands in achieving many of her greatest successes.
