French Karim Benzema, top scorer of Real Madrid, the Spanish football champions, won the title of best player this season, according to a referendum in the Spanish newspaper "Marca".
Benzema surpassed Argentine Lionel Messi, top scorer of Barcelona and fellow Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, according to the results of the survey published by "Marca" today on its website.
Benzema won 36 percent of the vote, which reached about 120,000 people.
Messi finished second with 32 percent of the vote, while Ramos came third with 14 percent of the vote.
The Real Madrid awards were not limited to the title of best player, but his French coach Zinedine Zidane won the title of best coach after he led the team to the domestic league title.
Zidane won 46 percent of the votes, beating Diego Martinez, who had a great surprise with his team, Granada, and led him to seventh place in the table.
Readers of "Marca" Lucas Ocampos chose the Sevilla striker as the best deal of the season with 38 percent of the vote.
