  Xu Jie graduated from the Physics Department of Chengde Teachers College in 1956 and was transferred to the Men’s Volleyball Team (the predecessor of the Liaoning Men’s Volleyball Team) in the same year. In the spring of 1957, Xu Jie represented the Liaoning team in the national volleyball league held in Guangzhou as the main setter. This was also Xu Jie's first appearance in the national volleyball arena.

  Xu Jie showed a good technical and tactical level in the game, especially a strong offensive level. After the game, Xu Jie transferred to the national youth team. In 1959, the entire national youth team was promoted to the national team. A group of players with Xu Jie included Deng Ruozeng, Ma Like, Feng Zhenghai, Li Zongyong, Li Yuexian, and so on. These players later became elites of Chinese volleyball.

  In the early 1960s, Xu Jie became the coach of the National Women's Volleyball Team II and went to Vietnam in 1969 to coach the Vietnam National Men's Volleyball Team. His work attitude, business level, and professionalism have been highly praised by the Vietnamese volleyball community. The technical and tactical level of the Vietnamese men's volleyball team has improved significantly under his guidance and has become a strong team in Southeast Asia.

  In 1970, Xu Jie returned to Beijing. After briefly coaching the National Women's Volleyball Team, Xu Jie was appointed as the head coach of the National Women's Volleyball Team due to the need to train backup talents.

  Xu Jie did his best and worked tirelessly to select players in various provincial and municipal volleyball teams. Eventually, the National Women's Volleyball Team No. 2 was formed in December 1970. Unfortunately, the National Women's Volleyball Team No. 2 was dissolved in August 1972.

  From the end of 1972 to 1975, Xu Jie was appointed by the State Sports Commission to return to Liaoning to help guide the work of Liaoning men and women volleyball teams. He has assisted and guided the Liaoning Youth Men's Volleyball Team and the Liaoning Men's and Women's Volleyball Teams.

  Liaoning Youth Men's Volleyball Team won the 1973 National Youth Championship. Liaoning Men's Volleyball Team won the second place in the third National Games in 1975. The women's volleyball team won the fourth place. In the 1970s, Chinese men's queuing team members Hu Jin, Hou Jie, and Zheng Yiming, and women's queuing team Qi Lixia were all members of Xu Jie's training.

  In 1977, Xu Jie led the Chinese Youth Men’s Volleyball Team to win the Asian Youth Championship in Hong Kong and qualified for the World Youth Championship. In August, at the first FIVB World Youth Championships held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Xu Jie led the Chinese youth men’s volleyball team to fight hard and dare to fight, and finally won the runner-up.

  His team members Xu Zhen, Zhang Renjiang, Li Xinshan, Xin Peiming, etc. have successively entered the national men's volleyball team. Dong Ruijun, Shi Yongming, Zhang Jiucheng, Sun Tong, Liu Wuyi and other players have also become head coaches of various provincial and municipal teams after retiring.

  From 1980 to 1982, Xu Jie entered the Chinese men's volleyball team to assist the coach Dai Tingbin. Winning the fifth place in the 1981 World Cup and seventh place in the 1982 World Championships, etc., created a glorious era for the Chinese men's volleyball team "out of Asia, to the world", "unity and revitalization of China". Xu Jie is diligent and dedicated, diligently studies, conscientiously trains, and strives for excellence, and has made great contributions to Chinese volleyball.

  In 1983, Xu Jie was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Training Bureau of the National Sports Commission, assisting the training bureau to provide advice and suggestions for the training of the national team. At the same time, he also served as the training guide for the national adult or youth volleyball team training held in Zhangzhou, Chenzhou, Liuzhou, Qinhuangdao and other bases by the National Sports Committee Volleyball Department every year.

  After retiring in 1995, Xu Jie was still invited by the Volleyball Department and the Volleyball Management Center of the General Administration of Sport established in 1997 to serve as the training guide for the national volleyball training camp, and he did his best to help guide the training of volleyball teams in various provinces and cities across the country.

  After 2000, Xu Jie was still interested in volleyball and served as the head and coach of the national veteran men’s volleyball team. Every year, he led members of the old national team to participate in volleyball competitions throughout the country, promoted volleyball, and continued the volleyball complex without complaint.
