The university in his hometown has never before awarded an honorary doctorate to such a young person. This is the highest honor the university can award.

Former United coach Sir Alex Ferguson and club legend Bobby Charlton have previously been named honorary doctors.

"When you see what amazing names have previously received this award, you become humble," Rashford said in a statement.

The Englishman, who himself grew up in cramped conditions, has been praised for having made the government continue to give vulnerable children free meals even during the summer when schools are closed.

He has also raised around 20 million pounds, close to a quarter of a billion kronor, for charity during the corona crisis.
