However, a new name will not be announced yet, according to the Washington Post because of a trademark protection dispute.

The American NFL team Washington Redskins have been called for years to change their names, to slightly less offensive.
The team's owner Daniel Snyder has refused and said there will be no change of name as long as he is allowed to decide.

The team began using the name Redskins in 1933 (which can be translated by the derogatory "redskins"), when the team was based in Boston. Former owner George Preston Marshall moved the team to the capital in 1937. A statue of him, standing outside the RFK Stadium, was removed in June this year after major protests against the team.

The protests against the team have gained new momentum during the demonstrations against racism and police violence that began after George Floyd was killed in connection with a Minneapolis police raid in May.
