According to the Leeds website, Charlton died after a long illness.

The defender played for Leeds United from 1952 to 1973. On his account a record 773 matches for the club, in which he scored 96 goals. Together with the team, he became the champion of England (1969), and also won the FA Cup, League Cup and the Super Bowl of the country. In addition, he twice won the Fairs Cup with the team.

From 1965 to 1970, Charlton defended the colors of England. In 1966, he won the world championship with the national team, and won bronze in 1968.
