  • Controversy. Pere Navarro: "The delay in approving 30 km / h in the city has burned me"

When in the middle of May, Spain began with the gradual de-escalation of territories, the roads quickly noticed that traffic was increasing and accidents began to slow down. That situation did not go further and June still ended with 35% fewer deaths on the road.

However, alarms have jumped in the DGT when taking stock of what happened since June 21, when all of Spain abandoned the state of alarm and traffic restrictions disappeared (well, in fact, they returned to heavy vehicles).

And it is that between that date and this past Thursday, 61 deaths have been counted, for the 56 that were registered in the same days last year. This supposes an increase of 9%, still important although it does not reach the increase of 22% that the DGT reported yesterday and that results from establishing the comparison only until the 8th (Wednesday). Of those 61 fatalities, 18 occurred during this last weekend, a level of accident rate so high that it would be necessary to go back to July 2019 to find similar data. Also, one in three was a biker.

Of particular concern is the influence that speed may be having on these claims. It was already verified during the state of alarm that the absence of traffic resulted in more speeding and now, when there is still less traffic (between 7% and 22% less depending on the weekday or weekend) , the rush to go see the family, the second residence or on vacation is added, stopping as little as possible along the way for fear of contagion. In this way, if during the month of February the radars denounced 54 of every 1,000 vehicles they controlled, during the past weekend there were 70. In other words, the percentage of drivers driving with excessive speed has grown by 30%.
