Tom Dumoulin will not participate in the NK cycling on the VAM mountain near the Drentse Wijster on 23 August. The national title fight does not fit in his run-up to the Tour de France, which starts six days later.

Dumoulin will ride the Criterium du Dauphiné from 12 to 16 August and has decided to stay in France afterwards to prepare optimally for the Tour de France.

"I already have a very busy program leading up to the Tour, with altitude stages, competitions and then even more altitude stages," said the rider of Jumbo-Visma to the NOS on Monday . "It is not possible to return to the Netherlands in the meantime."

Dumoulin will probably also have to miss the time trial at the World Cycling Championships. The race against the clock in Martigny, Switzerland, is scheduled for September 20, the final day of the Tour.

"Even if I have bad legs and cannot participate in the rankings, I basically just finish the Tour," promises the 29-year-old rider. "Hopefully the team will participate with one of the three leaders in the rankings and then I will be valuable, even with a lesser form."

The Tour de France was initially scheduled from June 27 to July 19. However, due to the corona crisis, the cycling calendar has been completely overhauled and there are many races that will overlap this year.
