Merel van Dongen makes the switch from Real Betis to Atlético Madrid. The Orange Women defender has signed for two years with the Spanish club, which became champion of the Primera División Femenina de España in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
"I have always had the ambition to move to a top club and I am therefore very happy with my transfer to Atlético Madrid. A club with a rich history in women's football," said Van Dongen in a first reaction to her transfer on Friday. .
27-year-old Van Dongen played for two years at Betis, which took her over from Ajax. She becomes the only Dutch at Atlético, because keeper Sari van Veenendaal has just left. The Orange captain was reserve keeper in Madrid last season and opted for a transfer to PSV.
