Cortina is located in the province of Veneto, one of the first and hardest corona affected areas in the world. Cortina would also host the alpine season finale in March, which was canceled.

Because the area has been hit so hard, the Italian Winter Sports Association has appealed for the World Cup to be postponed from 2021 to 2022, but that will not be the case.

- It was a strong will to use all our forces to ensure that all world championships are performed at the highest level. Based on that feedback and clear commitment from all parties, the Italian Winter Sports Association expressed the importance of conducting the World Cup 2021 in order to send positive signals to the entire Italian country, says Fis's President, Flavio Roda.
