Trainer Filippo Inzaghi thinks he has written history with Benevento. The team secured promotion to Serie A on Monday.

The team owes that in large part to the rock-solid defense. In 31 league matches, the team collected only fifteen hits.

"The boys have done a great job. We have the best defensive figures in all of Europe," Inzaghi said in a TV interview after the 1-0 win over Juve Stabia, making the promotion a reality.

"Today's game gives a good impression of our team. We played ten men for most of the game, but we continued to fight for the victory," said the former top striker.

Benevento equaled a Serie B record by winning the championship seven games before the end. Only Ascoli already did that in the 1977/78 season, when two more points were given for a victory.

"We have done something historically," said 46-year-old Inzaghi. "We won all the home games, it was just a great season."

Grateful to Inzaghi for confidence

Inzaghi has previously been a trainer of AC Milan, Venezia and Bologna without much success, before joining Benevento a year ago. The club played only one season in Serie A (in 2017/18) in its history and was signed last.

"I want to thank the president of the club for the confidence he had in me. Thanks to him we also made history."

Next season, the coach will face Serie A against his brother Simone Inzaghi, who is the trainer of Lazio.
