It was Messi's 630th goal for Barcelona and before that he stands at 70 for Argentina. He extended the record for the Spanish High League. Noteworthy is that the second best scorer in the Barcelona jersey, César Rodríguez, made 232.

Despite the milestone and the temporary series lead, Messi showed frustration and was given a yellow card when he unnecessarily kicked the ball away after being blown off in connection with a close match.

The minute after the yellow card, Barcelona was hit by a cold shower when Atletico acknowledged 2-2 on penalty. Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen was on the ball with his fingertips, but Saul's penalty was sought in goal. It became fatal for Barcelona.
