Sergio Ramos broke a record of Ronald Koeman in the game with Real Sociedad (1-2 win) on Sunday evening. The Real Madrid captain made his 68th goal in La Liga and is now the highest scoring defender ever at the highest level in Spain.
The 34-year-old Ramos used a penalty in San Sebastian shortly after the break, improving the number of goals by Koeman. The current coach of the Dutch national team scored 67 goals in 1989 league matches for FC Barcelona between 1989 and 1995.
Ramos has played 468 La Liga games for Sevilla and Real Madrid since 2004. He made two league goals for Sevilla at the start of his career and now has 66 league goals on behalf of Real. He made twelve of them from the penalty spot.
With his seventh La Liga goal of the season, the 170-time Spanish international equaled a personal best. Only in the 2016/2017 season did he also score seven goals in the league.
"In my opinion, Sergio is the best defender in the world," said trainer Zinedine Zidane after the victory over Real Sociedad, which gave Real the lead. "There are many good defenders, but what Sergio has been showing for years is very impressive."
Ramos was substituted in the 60th minute because of an injury, but according to Zidane the damage is not too bad. "He has a lot of pain in his leg now, but I think it was just a hit."
Sergio Ramos has now scored 68 LaLiga goals, surpassing Ronald Koeman as the highest-scoring defender in the competition's history.Ramos the record-breaker. 👊Avatar
