Grigor Dimitrov announced on Sunday that he had contracted the new coronavirus a week after taking part in the "Adria Tour", a series of exhibition matches organized by Novak Djokovic in the Balkans, causing the cancellation of the final in Zadar on Sunday.

"I want to announce to my fans and my friends that I tested positive for Covid-19 on my return to Monaco," wrote on his Instagram account the Bulgarian, who rubbed shoulders with several high-ranking tennis players including Serbian world number one.

“I want to make sure that everyone who has been in contact with me for the past few days gets tested and takes the necessary precautions. I am sorry if I caused harm. I went home and I'm recovering, ”says Dimitrov.

As a result, the Adria Tour final scheduled for Sunday evening in Zadar (Croatia) between Djokovic and the Russian Andrey Rublev was canceled. "It's the best decision possible. We must guarantee the safety of all participants. The people who have been in contact with Grigor will be tested, ”promised tournament director Goran Ivanisevic, interviewed by Croatian media.

Braces, basketball match and big party

Sunday, June 14, Dimitrov participated in Belgrade in the first stage of this exhibition tournament across the Balkans organized by Djokovic, in front of full stands. In particular, in addition to Dimitrov and the world number 1, Dominic Thiem (number 3), Alexander Zverev (17th world) and the former Serbian world number 1 Jelena Jankovic were present.

Few spectators wore a mask and the distance was hardly respected, especially between the players: Dimitrov was seen giving a hug to Thiem on the court. A basketball match was also organized at the end of last week. A few days earlier, during the previous stage of the tournament in Belgrade, everyone gathered for a big party. According to videos posted on the Internet, the barrier gestures were quite far from the considerations of the players.

Djokovic had responded to criticisms of the lack of distancing observed by highlighting the "rather decent" record of the Balkan countries in their fight against the coronavirus. The tournament continued on Saturday in Zadar, with the participation of Dimitrov, who withdrew after playing his first game against Borna Coric.
