Ahmed Radhi , considered one of the most famous ex-soccer players in Iraq, died as a result of complications from COVID-19, according to the country's sports minister, Adnan Darjal .

According to local media, Ahmed Radhi was hospitalized last week in Baghdad after testing positive for coronavirus.

On Thursday he was released from the hospital, as his condition improved, but he relapsed hours later and died.

The 56-year-old former striker scored 62 goals in 121 appearances for the Iraqi national team before retiring from international soccer in 1997 and went down in his country's soccer history after scoring his country's only goal in a soccer World Cup . Both scored it in the 1986 World Cup in the defeat of their national team against Belgium by 1-2.
