Olympique de Marseille avoided the worst. Friday, June 19, OM was sanctioned by UEFA with a fine of three million euros for violating the rules of financial fair play. His participation in the next Champions League, however, was not questioned.

The judgment chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Commission (ICFC) has only imposed financial and administrative sanctions to punish the club's excessively high deficits, noted since its takeover by the American Franck McCourt in 2016 .

In addition to the fine, the authority has decided to withdraw 15% of the sums that the club will collect for its participation in European competitions for 2020-2021 and possibly 2021-2022 if it is qualified.

It also imposes a limit of 23 players on the squad who can compete in the continental cups until 2022-2023.

Manchester City excluded in February

Supporters feared the black scenario of a suspension of all European competitions, when the anthem of the C1 was to resonate at the Vélodrome next fall, when the group phase resumed from 20 October. OM qualified thanks to their second place in the Ligue 1 exercise, but everything was interrupted by the coronavirus.

A lesser harm for the Marseille club, therefore, compared to the case of Manchester City, which was excluded in February from European competitions for the next two seasons, for higher amounts. The English club appealed to the Sports Arbitral Tribunal (CAS).
