American athlete Christian Coleman , the 100-meter world champion , has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit ( AIU ) for not being available for an anti-doping control, a measure that the runner believes could have been avoided "with a simple phone call "because when they tried to reach him, he was" shopping five minutes from home ".

Controllers showed up at Coleman's home on December 9 and knocked on the door for an hour, with no response from inside.

This is stated in the 'failed attempt notice' that was sent to the athlete, who has already missed other controls in the past . The American Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) ended up exonerating him and he was able to compete in the Doha World Championships last year, where he won the 100 meters with a personal record (9.76).

A firm sanction could result in a two-year suspension and Coleman's absence from the Tokyo Olympics in July 2021.

In a statement after the announcement of his provisional suspension, which appears on Wednesday in the updated list of sanctions of the AIU, Coleman says that whenever he has been subjected to control he has been "called by phone" and does not understand why this time he did not It was like this. He adds that he has been appealing for six months for the decision that has now been announced.

Coleman admits that this is his third lack of control in the last twelve months and, although he admits his guilt in one of the previous two, he considers that this third is due to "an intentional purpose" of making him miss an exam.

"I have been checked many times afterwards, even during quarantine. But of course it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter that I have never used drugs, " he said in his statement.

"You know this is wrong, AIU. Something has to change," says Coleman.

The AIU, the independent body responsible for anti-doping policy in the World Athletics Federation, stresses that a provisional suspension "in no case" constitutes an attack on the athlete's presumption of innocence "and is not a previous guilty sentence "

"It is a decision taken as a precautionary measure to safeguard the interests of the sport," he points out.
