Iker Casillas, former goalkeeper and captain of the Spanish world champion team in 2010, has decided to withdraw his candidacy for the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) due to the situation generated in his country by the coronavirus . "I would like to announce that I have decided not to stand in the next recently called RFEF elections," Casillas, 39, wrote on Monday in a message on his social networks.

The 2010 world champion justified his withdrawal by "the exceptional social, economic and health situation from which our country suffers" which "makes the elections (for the presidency of the federation) pass into the background".

"In sports and at the federal level, we need to focus on how to help players, clubs, competitions, and the elections would just wear us out and force us to focus on something that doesn't is not essential today, ”said Casillas.

Sole competitor to Rubiales

The announcement of the ex-goalkeeper of Real Madrid (1999-2015), still fired at FC Porto, leaves the field open to Luis Rubiales for a re-election to the presidency of the RFEF during the poll scheduled last week for the 17 next august. Casillas was the only person who showed his willingness to compete with Rubiales for the position at the head of the RFEF, when he presented his candidacy in mid-February.

Victim of a heart attack in May 2019 while playing under the colors of FC Porto since 2015, Casillas joined the staff of his team during his convalescence, without formally announcing that he was hanging up on the boots. He has not replayed in an official match since.
