Decathlon world record holder Kevin Mayer won a very special kind of distance triathlon on Sunday, which is said to fill the calendar gap due to the coronavirus pandemic. The athlete, who competed in Montpellier (Hérault), was better than the German world champion Niklas Kaul and the Estonian Maicel Uibo.

Feels good to "compete" again! Against great distant competitors.
But truly can't wait to face them and all of my decathletes friends in a real decathlon 🤙🏼

On the menu of this Ultimate Garden Clash, a distance competition format launched by the International Athletics Federation to compensate for the stopping of meetings, pole vault (crossing a maximum of bars at 4 m in 10 minutes), throw weights (throw more than 12 m as many times as possible for 10 minutes) and run (make as many round trips over a distance of 20 m for 5 minutes).

" I felt good "

Kevin Mayer was the strongest in this little game by dominating Niklas Kaul, based in Mainz (Germany), and Maicel Uibo, who officiated from Clermont (United States). The Frenchman flew over the pole (17 successful jumps) and the weight (28 successful throws) before being narrowly beaten in the race (26 successful round trips for Mayer, 27 for Klaus). He won with a total of 71 points.

"I had fun, I felt good," says Kevin Mayer. There was someone whispering to me to tell me where the other two were. I felt that I had control over the situation and it felt good (…) I was stressed all day as before a big championship. Especially since we had never done that, it was the total unknown. "
