Two players were injured in the ranks of Benfica club late in the evening, after the team bus was pelted with stones after the end of their team's match against Tondila in the local league, as the Lisbon club announced.
A statement issued by Benfica said that the international German Julian Feigl and the international Serb Andrea Zivkovic were taken "to the hospital as a precaution, after they were hit by splinters of glass."
"The Benfica bus was attacked by stone throwing when the team was heading to the club's training headquarters in the Cixal region after leaving the La Luz stadium," the club asked the authorities to "identify" the actors who carried out these "criminal acts."
The Portuguese League also condemned the attack on the Benfica bus, describing it as a "coward attack" that occurred "at a time when Portuguese football showed a concerted effort to revive the activity that returns millions of people with joy."
The Portuguese league resumed its activities on Wednesday after a hiatus of nearly three months, and the first day witnessed a sudden loss for leaders Porto in Familecao 1-2, before Benfica clinched first place with a difference of goals after a negative tie with Tondila Thursday.
