At first, they only got 0-0 against Tondela in the restart of the Portuguese football league, and failed to pull off the table top. On the way home Benfica's bus was stoned. Two players, German midfielder Julian Weigl and Serbian oyster Andrija Zivkovic, were hit by glass shards and had to be taken to hospital for transplantation.
The bus attack happened on the highway between the stadium Estadio da Luz and the training facility.
"Benfica condemns and regrets the criminal stoning of the bus that the players were exposed to," the club writes in a statement.
The split points mean that Benfica and Porto continue to split the table top by 60 points. Nine rounds remain.
