Toivonen signed for the then Australian football champions Melbourne in August 2018. However, due to a wounds injury, it was late in November of the same year before he premiered with the team.

"Given everything that's happening in the world and in the league right now, we think it's the right time for us to move home to Europe," says Toivonen.

During his time in Australia he has played 40 games and scored 25 goals.

It has been speculated in Swedish media - most recently in the Aftonbladet earlier this week - that he could possibly return to Malmö FF, where he played between 2007 and 2009.
