• USA Tesla, exonerated from the first fatal accident of one of its cars with Autopilot

The video hits. But it is even more impressive that the driver of this Tesla Model 3 got out of the vehicle practically unscathed after that collision with an overturned truck on a Taiwan highway. Probably not at a very high speed (the brakes acted as an emergency when there was no margin left) and that is why the airbags did not even jump.

Now all observers try to explain another secret. How is it possible that the driver did not see the bulky obstacle on the road and did not deviate to his right, with enough space to do it comfortably? Even the truck driver, in the median, warns him of the danger.

The Teslas carry an appreciable degree of autonomy, but it is not an autonomous car, even if its system is called Autopilot. In fact, in July 2016, the first fatal accident occurred in a brand car whose driver had activated this system. Tesla was found not guilty, because although the system was dazzled by a trailer crossing the road, the driver had time and should have reacted.

However, the brand was forced to report that the Autopilot was not equivalent to an autopilot and that it was only a help system. And that it was in continuous development. In fact, the device is now disabled if the driver does not respond to prompts to take the controls.

Returning to the Taiwan crash, a car without a driver, in a few years, would have taken the appropriate measures to avoid the accident that has been known now. Perhaps some other system patented by other brands would have stopped earlier, because obviously the braking (which is recognized by the smoke seen in the video) is late.

Another video shows how less sophisticated car drivers and apparently without state-of-the-art security systems in their cars, brake in time and even stop before the truck and wait to access the right lanes.

So if Tesla can and should review what their cars can and cannot do, what is clear that today the responsibility for any accident lies with those who drive the wheel and it seems clear that the driver of this Tesla Model 3 was mentally off the road he was rolling on. If your abandonment was due to overconfidence in the autonomous braking of the car, there is no excuse. He would be solely responsible.

Even so, it will be necessary to wait for the subsequent examinations to clarify this incomprehensible accident in a crowded state.
