According to the American business magazine Forbes, Naomi Osaka can call herself the highest paid female athlete in the world. The two-time Grand Slam winner replaces Serena Williams as number one on the list.

According to Forbes , the only 22-year-old Osaka has made $ 37.4 million (converted about $ 34.3 million) in prize money and other earnings in the last twelve months. With that, she raised 1.4 million dollars more than the 38-year-old Williams, who has been the highest paid female athlete for the past four years.

The top tennis players both broke the former record set by Maria Sharapova. The Russian earned $ 29.7 million in 2015 and no one got over it until this year. Ever since 1990, when Forbes started calculating incomes, the highest rank in the ranking has been held by a tennis star.

On the list of women and men, Osaka occupies 29th place, while Williams occupies 33rd position. It is the first time since 2016 that two women are in the top hundred highest paid athletes in the world. The full list will be released next week.

Osaka, who defeated 23-time Grand Slam winner Williams in the controversial 2018 US Open final, is not going through the best period in her still early career. Her last tournament win dates from January 2019, when she won the Australian Open.

In the four Grand Slam tournaments that Osaka played after that, she never reached the quarter finals. Due to the corona crisis, Osaka was only on the track eight times this year. The tennis season has been stopping since March and anyway until July 31.
