Five minutes before the break, Robert Lewandowski put 1–0 on penalty after Berlin's Neven Subotic kicked Thomas Müller. The goal was Lewandowski's 26th goal in the Bundesliga in 24 games played.

Before his goal, Bayern had scored by Thomas Müller who was first approved by the VAR - but who was then blown off for offside. The serial leader could still easily win over Union Berlin by 2-0 after Benjamin Pavard pushed the 2-0 goal ten minutes from the end.

With the victory, Bayern Munich consolidate the series lead as they are still four points ahead of Dortmund.
