Will Italian football be back in just one month? The general assembly of Serie A said Wednesday, May 13 that it wanted to resume on June 13 the championship, stopped on March 9 by the coronavirus pandemic.

"Regarding the resumption of sports activities and in compliance with government decisions and in accordance with medical protocols for the protection of players (...), the date of June 13 for the resumption of the championship has been indicated", according to a press release.

Green light from the authorities ... for training

The government must make a decision but remains very cautious about a resumption of competition. The Minister of Sports, Vincenzo Spadafora, however gave the green light to a resumption on May 18 of collective training. Individual sessions resumed on May 4.

"A few minutes ago, I received a letter from the president of the federation, Gabriele Gravina. He informed me that the federation had followed all the recommendations of the Technical and Scientific Committee and had readjusted its protocol, thus allowing the resumption without further difficulty of collective training from May 18, "said Vincenzo Spadafora on Wednesday before the Chamber of Deputies.

Quarantine when a case occurs

The most delicate point of this protocol concerns the obligation made to clubs to put their entire workforce in quarantine for 15 days, as well as the staff, as soon as a positive case appears.

The Italian championship clubs had already said they wanted to end the season several times and had voted unanimously on April 21. But this is the first time that a date to resume competition has been officially mentioned.
