Spanish police have arrested the former Real Madrid player, Colombian Edwin Congo, on charges of drug trafficking, as part of a security operation to combat cocaine smuggling, while Congo denied the charge.
Congo, 43, who retired from football in 2009, did not play a match with the first team of the Royal Club, but spent his years with him (1999-2002) on loan to Valladolid, Vitoria Guimaraes of Portugal and Toulouse of France.
The former attacker and ten other people were arrested on Tuesday night by Spanish police, as part of an operation to dismantle a network involved in drug trafficking, and he was released after being interrogated.
"I am innocent, I have never had anything to do with selling or manufacturing or anything related to cocaine," Kongo told Spanish channel "La Sixta".
"I have relationships with people involved. But it is not, to the conclusion, that I changed my life or did something unusual," the Colombian explained.
Congo joined the Royal Club in 1999, but appeared more on the footballing scene after moving to Levante in 2002.
