Spanish police have arrested former Colombian Real Madrid player Edwin Congo, as part of investigations into a cocaine smuggling case, a news report said Tuesday.

"ESBN" explained that the 43-year-old Congo was arrested in Madrid by the anti-drug trafficking police, and he was released after being interrogated, and indicated that the police arrested ten other people in the same case.

Congo had joined Real Madrid in 1999 from Colombia's Aons Caldas, and spent most of his time with the Royal Club loaning to Valladolid, Vitoria Guimaraes of Portugal and Toulouse of France.

In 2002, Congo moved to Levante, with whom he spent his most successful period in Spanish football, before playing for Sporting Gijon and Recreativo Huelva.

Congo participated in 17 games with the Colombian national team, and was present in two copies of the South American Nations Cup (Copa America) in 1999 and 2004.
