For five years, the trial in the corruption case against 74-year-old Beckenbauer, and four other men, has been ongoing in Switzerland. The group has been investigated for corruption in connection with the 2006 World Cup.

But because of the corona eruption, the trial is now ending. In addition, the limitation period has expired - which means that no judgment will be possible, the BBC reports.

"The fact that the goal is now completed without any result is very worrying, not only for the football, but for the judiciary in Switzerland," Fifa writes in a statement.

Beckenbauer was head of the organizing committee when Germany was named host country for the 2006 World Cup. He was accused of making two payments totaling £ 8.4 million to former Fifa member Mohamed Bin Hamman.

Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as a player in 1974 and as coach in 1990, has denied the allegations.
