The NBA plans to authorize the reopening of training facilities starting next Friday, for which some states and cities in the country are releasing restrictions, such as staying home, imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The authorization would allow players to return to work under team control at their facilities, but individually.

The information in this regard was offered tonight by several journalistic sources, without the office of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver making any official comment on the matter.

The possibility of starting the training sessions even if they are individual, however, worries some CEOs, given the medical opinions of experts who maintain the position that it is still early to resume these activities.

A number of sources indicated that players will be able to return to their teams' facilities in states such as Georgia, where the Atlanta Hawks are set to conduct voluntary individual training next week.

Teams will continue to be prohibited from training or other group activities, according to the same sources.

They added that in the US constituencies where a more restrictive government of stay-at-home orders remains, the NBA will tell teams that the league will work with franchises to help find alternative arrangements with the players.

Without a new calendar

However, the partial opening of the NBA, based on the release of certain local government policies, does not mean for the moment that there will be a new schedule for the resumption of the championship, which was suspended on March 11.

The NBA decided to suspend all activities after French jazz center Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz was the first player in the league to test positive for the coronavirus.

News sources noted that Commissioner Silver and the owners of NBA teams need more work time and consultations aimed at determining how and when to resume the season.

Many basketball team executives have been clamoring for the opportunity for players to return to their facilities, which they consider to be among the safest possible environments for them to be safe from the pandemic.

In a conference call with general managers and Silver on Thursday, some executives said they had players asking about the possibility of traveling to Atlanta to exercise in gyms, an idea that was troubling within the NBA.

Organizations with open facilities are expected to be able to allow opposing players living in their cities to use their gyms on a limited basis.

Many teams give players who reside in Los Angeles, Houston and Miami during the off-season permission to play at the facilities of teams like the Lakers, Clippers and Rockets, among others.

The Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs are also thought to have their respective training areas ready next week for their players to start working individually.

However, none of the teams has commented on the possibility of opening their facilities or on the training plans they may develop.
