Aged 81, former AS Saint-Etienne coach Robert Herbin was hospitalized in intensive care at the Saint-Etienne University Hospital, according to information from the Parisian and the Team, of which Europe 1 had confirmation. His condition is considered serious.

It is part of the history of AS Saint-Etienne, which he almost carried on the roof of European football in the 1970s. The former player and then coach of the Greens Robert Herbin, aged 81 since a few weeks, is hospitalized at the Saint-Etienne University Hospital, according to information from several media, of which Europe 1 has had confirmation. Very weak, "the Sphinx", who suffers from cardiac and pulmonary problems, is judged to be in serious condition. But his hospitalization would have nothing to do with the epidemic of coronavirus which currently prevails in France.

Coach of the famous Glasgow final in 1976

Under his leadership, ASSE had its best moments. Player then coach three times of the club from Stéphane, Robert Herbin has won nine French champion titles and six French Cups. But it was as a coach that he made a whole country vibrate by allowing Saint-Etienne, at the end of a crazy European epic, to reach the final of the Coupe des clubs champions 1976 (the ancestor of the Champions League). A final marked by the famous Glasgow square posts, and lost to Bayern Munich (0-1). This did not prevent the team from parading on the Champs-Elysées a few hours later.

Unfortunately, the one who lives as a hermit on the outskirts of Saint-Etienne cut himself off from all the players of the time, who had no more news from their former coach. Robert Herbin had very little contact with the outside world. A situation which seems to have worsened with confinement.
