Eredivisie is the first European league to end the season early. However, no league winners will be appointed and no team will be moved up or down either.
Ajax led the league on better goal difference than AZ Alkmaar, but is thus not crowned a winner.
- As a player and club you want to become a champion on the pitch. We have been at the top of the league all season, so it is unfair that we are not crowned victors. But in the current situation it is understandable, says the club's CEO, Edwin Van Der Sar to their website.
The decision from the Netherlands came three days after the Prime Minister banned crowds until September 1. At the same time, Uefa yesterday appealed that all leagues should try to complete their seasons using new formats. One suggestion is that the leagues should apply an end game, in order to be able to decide on sporting grounds who will qualify for the European games next season.
Belgium was already considering at the beginning of the month that the league game would be closed in advance and further decisions are expected on Monday.
