The KNVB went to the digital table with the professional clubs at 2.30 p.m. to discuss how the competitions should be completed. The football association will come to a conclusion at 6.30 pm . At that time, there should be an answer to the following questions:

  • Will a champion be declared?
  • How are European tickets distributed?
  • What about the promotion / relegation scheme?

Heerenveen denounces decision-making KNVB
SC Heerenveen-chairman Cees Roozemond has no good word about the decision-making of the KNVB, which puts the fate of relegation candidates RKC Waalwijk and ADO Den Haag to the clubs. "I had assumed that the union would make its own decision," says Roozemond at Omrop Fryslân . "We now have to decide whether Cambuur will be promoted or not. We are now discussing this. We must ensure that the emotion is removed from the discussion, otherwise there will soon be a thousand angry Cambuur supporters at the door."

"This will be a very unpleasant day," says the KNVB's general director. "We are going to decide on how to stop the competition and its consequences. That has never happened in professional football history."

'Bizarre scenario: Feyenoord wins KNVB cup'
We thought we had already had all the scenarios, but  De Telegraaf is now coming up with a very bizarre scenario. According to the newspaper, Feyenoord is declared the winner of the TOTO KNVB Cup because the Rotterdam team reached the final as a team. Lawyer Jan Kabalt protects for this purpose with article 11 of the professional football regulations. Only the professional football board can block Feyenoord's victory.

"KNVB wants European premiums to be distributed"
The KNVB believes that the clubs that play European football based on today's decision next season are morally obliged to share their premiums with the other clubs. According to  VI, this is stated in documents that the clubs received prior to the meeting. "Professional football organizations that will participate in European competitions under the decision of the board of professional football have a heavy moral obligation to distribute part of the funds they receive", it reads.

Scenario 2: degradation and promotion
The KNVB provides two arguments in the leaked letter for choosing this scenario:

  • The starting point of competitive football is that after the competitions have ended and based on the results achieved, they will be promoted and relegated.
  • Both for the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie, 75 percent of the league matches have been played. Based on the sporting results based on the matches played so far, it is possible to have relegation and promotion take place.

Scenario 1: no relegation and no promotion
In the leaked letter, the KNVB provides a number of arguments for choosing this scenario:

  • Both for the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie, a quarter of the (regular) league matches must still be played. In nine rounds in the Eerste Divisie and eight rounds (and a number of make-up matches) in the Eredivisie, much can still happen.
  • The promotion / relegation scheme also explicitly states that relegation and promotion will take place after the regular competitions have ended. In other words, if these leagues are fully played. Now that this is not the case, there are no PhD students and no degradants.
  • The sporting consequence of relegation and promotion cannot be attached to a competition until the two players have played twice or when the results have irrevocably been established.

Leaked letter confirms: twenty Eredivisie clubs not an option
The KNVB does not see an Eredivisie with twenty clubs as an option, as confirmed by a letter that De Telegraaf has received. The clubs are asked to vote for one of the following two scenarios before 4:30 pm today:

  • No relegation and no promotion
  • Relegation and promotion

Unlike the NOS , VI writes that the KNVB does not see a competition with twenty clubs as an option. The municipalities and the police have already expressed objections to a competition of this size. Also, the league schedule with twenty clubs would be way too full. Due to government measures, the Eredivisie must start later and also be completed in time for the European Championship of 2021.

According to the NOS , the KNVB asks for help from the professional clubs when deciding how to round the current Eredivisie season. The Eredivisie clubs would have received an email this morning asking to vote for one of these scenarios:

  • The competition will be canceled, European tickets will be distributed based on the current rankings. There are no degradants.
  • The current ranking is maintained, on the basis of which the European tickets are distributed and relegants are designated.
  • There are no relegants, but there are two clubs that promote. As a result, the Eredivisie consists of twenty clubs after the summer.

Do you think that the KNVB should declare a champion in the Eredivisie today?

  • No, this season must end without a champion
  • Yes, Ajax must become champion (because current leader)
  • Yes, AZ must become champion (because better mutual result)

'KNVB wants Eredivisie with eighteen clubs'
De KNVB prefers to see an Eredivisie with eighteen teams, De Telegraaf knows . The football association puts the fate of RKC Waalwijk and ADO Den Haag, the clubs that are now on relegation places, allegedly in the hands of the other Eredivisie clubs. The clubs would be allowed to vote with the KNVB on the promotion / relegation scheme today. SC Cambuur is the leader in the Kitchen Champion Division and may therefore still hope for promotion.
