• Liga Endesa: how the competition will be resolved

If on Monday it was the Endesa League that went ahead with its Assembly and marked the roadmap to resume the competition, always in the hypothetical case that sanitary conditions allowed it, this Thursday it was the Euroleague that established its steps back. And, as it seemed foreseen, they collide fully with those of the national competition.

The Executive Board of Commercial Asset Shareholders, meeting electronically for the third time since the season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, announced the steps to be followed to complete the season of both the Euroleague - stopped with six days to go. end of the regular phase - like the Eurocup. Jordi Bertomeu had already anticipated that in no case would they go to play in September and October.

May 24 is the deadline set to make the decision to resume and complete the competitions or to cancel them permanently. A quarantine is established from May 29 to June 11 , and a preseason from June 12 to July 2. From July 4 to 17, the Eurocup games would be played, and from 4 to 26 of the same month, those of the Euroleague. Everything in the same venue -different in each tournament-, still to be determined, and behind closed doors.

A project similar to that of the ACB. The problem is that they coincide in dates. The Endesa League clubs announced that they would play an express playoffs with 12 teams in a unique venue with a final deadline of July 10 . With which, given the conditions for the return of the competition, once again the 'war' between the Euroleague would be served, which in this edition has four Spanish teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Baskonia and Valencia) and the national competitions.

As Bertomeu already explained, the Euroleague schedule includes the 54 remaining matches of the regular season plus one final to eight in the same venue. And the Eurocup, which is followed by another Spanish team (Unicaja) , will include the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, either in a double-match series or in a single-eliminator format, all in the same venue different from that of the Euroleague.

Reduction of wages

The conciliation agreement between the clubs and the ELPA (players union) has also been announced , establishing a series of minimum obligations and guarantees for the rest of the 2019-20 season. While the competitions remain suspended, the players will be able to return to their home cities temporarily under their responsibility, although the Euroleague recommends that "they follow the directives of the government and public health authorities".

Additionally, payments on 2019-20 player salaries have been postponed. If the competition resumes, contracts will be extended until July 31, 2020. 85% of the players' base salary for the 2019-20 season will be paid by the clubs, no later than August 15, 2020.

If the 2019-20 season is canceled, the Euroleague agreed that "player contracts for the 2019-20 season are considered terminated."

"This is an important agreement for the league. I want to express my gratitude to all the players for having understood that they are an integral part of the solution to the crisis that we all face," Bertomeu said.
