Former Italian player Antonio Cassano said Wednesday that the biggest regret of his career is "not having taken the opportunity to play for Real Madrid", where he spent a year and a half between 2006 and 2007 , and acknowledged that it was his fault if he did not succeed in the Madrid team.

"My great regret is not having taken the opportunity to play with 23 years at Real Madrid, the greatest team in history, with the best players in the world, such as Zidane, Ronaldo (Nazario) and the others," said Cassano in an interview on Italian television "Sky Sport".

"In Madrid I could play a place in eleven with Robinho , and I also substituted Figo and Owen. That means he was one of the best, but I did a lot of 'disasters'," he acknowledged.

After scoring in his Copa del Rey debut against Real Betis , Cassano accumulated 17 games in his first six months in Madrid, but lost prominence the following year due to altercations with his compatriot coach Fabio Capello.

"In athletic preparation I lost 16 kilos and scored two goals in the first three games, but then I was left out of the team. I lost my mind and when you disrespect Capello, he leaves you out. Then he gave me another chance, he did a lot for me and a little for him, "he admitted.

Cassano arrived at Real Madrid in January 2006 from Roma and stayed with Madrid until the summer of 2007, when he returned to Italy to sign for Sampdoria. His Madrid stage ended with 29 games, four goals, and a Spanish League.
