The British driver Stirling Moss, one of the legends of the dawn of Formula 1, died on Sunday at the age of 90 after a long illness, which had withdrawn him from public life since January 2018. His statistic of 16 victories in 66 Races between 1951 and 1961 make him the most successful driver in history who could not be crowned world champion.

Moss's health problems worsened in December 2016, when he suffered a chest infection while enjoying a vacation in Singapore. Since then, his iron health, which allowed him to compete in classic races until he was 81 years old, has gradually weakened.

Moss' most famous moment in Formula 1 came at the 1958 Portuguese GP, the penultimate race of that World Cup, where he arrived with a slight advantage over compatriot Mike Hawthorn. That weekend, Moss did not hesitate to defend his opponent before the judges to avoid being disqualified for an illegal maneuver. That gesture of chivalry, which allowed Hawtorn to score seven points, ended up costing Moss the title.
