  • The board of directors of the National Volleyball League and the federal office of the French Basketball Federation have finalized the Championships in Men's and Women's Volleyball League and Women's Basketball League.
  • The titles of champions of France will not be awarded in these different championships. A first since the Second World War.
  • For their part, professional rugby and football - where stopping would have far greater financial consequences for clubs - have not yet made a decision on the continuation of the seasons.

Their decisions are firsts for professional sport in the five main team sports. The National Volleyball League has decided to end the season "unanimously with 29 votes" from the board of directors, the organization said in a press release.

"Given a deconfinement that promises to be uncertain and which will in any case be long and certainly not homogeneous throughout the territory, the re-athleticization time, the uncertainties concerning the reopening of halls, we decided to end at our championships, underlines its president Alain Griguer. We have to think about our athletes and we are unable to say in what physical and moral state they could possibly have resumed competition. "

No French volleyball champion, a first since 1944

Arrested on March 13 due to the coronavirus epidemic, the three professional championships managed by the LNV (Men's and Women's League A, Men's League B) had almost completed their preliminary phase. The top eight teams were preparing to play the play-offs.

For the first time since 1944, the title of champion of France will not be awarded. On the other hand, the steering committee rejected the idea of a white season: there will be an ascent and a descent in each division, according to the classification decided on March 13: Nice (which had twelve points behind Narbonne) is relegated in Ligue B and Saint-Jean d'Illac in the men's elite. Mougins is also relegated to the female elite.

European qualifiers appointed

In men's, Tours will compete in the Champions League. Montpellier, the winner of the Coupe de France (whose Final 4 is still maintained to this day on May 16 and 17 in Toulouse) or Nantes-Rezé, Rennes and Chaumont will participate in the other European cups

In terms of women, Mulhouse and Nantes are qualified for the Champions League, Le Cannet and the winner of the Coupe de France (May 16 and 17 in Cannes) or Cannes and Béziers are entered in the other European cups.

No descent on the side of women's basketball

The federal office of the French Basketball Federation made the same decision for the professional championship of the Women's League. A championship that depends on the Federation unlike its male counterpart, organized by the National Basketball League (LNB). Again, the title of champion of France will not be awarded. It is a first since 1942. Asvel (Villeurbanne), Bourges and BLMA (Montpellier) will compete in the Euroleague.

Unlike volleyball, however, there will be no relegation. The championships were less advanced than volleyball and the uncertainty still high on the teams likely to play the play-down.

In return for stopping for women's basketball, the FFBB decided, if it was decided by FIBA Europe, “to apply for the organization of a Final 8 of the Women's Euroleague at the start of the season . This in order to continue promoting women's basketball ”. Bourges, Asvel and BLMA were indeed qualified for the quarterfinals of the event before its suspension.
