During an extra board meeting yesterday, we discussed how the Gothia Cup will be implemented this summer due to the spread of the corona virus.

- We can say that it will not be an ordinary Gothia Cup this summer with the large international participation we usually have, says Gothia Cup's communications manager Malin Jonson to SVT Sport.

Since a week ago, it is clear that it will probably be a scaled-down variant of the world's largest football tournament.

- We have for a long time said that we are planning for different scenarios of Gothia Cup 2020 and we are now going sharper in our planning for the alternative scenarios that we have been looking at for some time. In this way, we hope to be able to conduct a scaled-down tournament, provided that the health situation permits.

What do these alternative scenarios look like?

- We have chosen not to go into more detail about the various alternatives externally.

Malin Jonson says that the development of the corona virus in the near future determines how a scaled-down variant of the Gothia Cup can look.

- But partly it is about the number of teams and the number of nations. If there are fewer teams, it will be a scaled-down tournament by automatic considering that we do not need as many plans and schools.

The Gothia Cup is scheduled to take place July 13-18 and moving the tournament forward is not an option as it is a recurring event. With three months left, however, it is hoped that the tournament will get rid of.

- Yes, we still hope so. But of course, health and safety comes first and foremost in all situations.
