Bernard Gonzalez, a doctor at the Stade de Reims, committed suicide on Sunday after becoming ill with Covid-19, as confirmed by the mayor of the French city, Arnaud Robinet. The 51-year-old doctor was confined to his home with his infected wife.

The historic French club, finalist of the European Cup in 1956 and 1959, expressed its condolences for the death of Gonzalez. "He was a man of science and letters, of inexhaustible curiosity. He was a man of paper, of ink, who showed off a crossed out writing but a neat verb", underlined the statement from the team, fifth place in Ligue 1 after the dispute of 28 days.

According to the newspaper Le Parisien , Gonzalez left a letter "explaining the link between his actions and his contagion", citing sources from the Prefecture de la Marne.

"He was a great professional, recognized and appreciated by all," said the Mayor of Reims. "My thoughts are with his parents, with his wife, with his family. He was a committed and very human man," added Robinet.

The club, which has dyed black the usual red of its shield, multiplied the signs of pain by an employee who worked faithfully for 23 years. "He was our doctor, our doctor, our 'Narbé' and he will be from the Stade forever," he concluded.
