Wayne Rooney, former England captain, has criticized the pressure that players in his country are facing to reduce their salaries in light of the Corona crisis, describing these pressures as "shameful."

Last week, British Health Minister Matt Hancock demanded that the Premier League players for the popular game cut their salaries, while the Champions League said it was in talks with the players with the goal of cutting salaries by 30 percent.

"What we have seen in the past few days has been shameful," Rooney wrote.

"First of all, the health minister ... said that Premier League players have to accept their pay cuts. Was he so desperate to divert attention from his government's handling of the epidemic?"

Rooney wondered why the association had publicly announced that it was seeking to reduce or postpone player wages by 30 percent.

"It seems that she was trying to embarrass the players in order to force them to accept, and whatever way you look at it, we were easy targets," Rooney said.

And English football stopped indefinitely in light of the outbreak of the virus, while some clubs, including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, dispensed some workers in light of the continuing crisis.

The second division team leader, Derby County, said that salary cuts should be made on an individual basis.

"Maybe one player says, 'Yes, I can waive 30 percent of my salary,'" Rooney said. "And another player may say," I can only waive five percent of the salary. I don't think this will cause any internal problem in the dressing room. "
