When the Premier League football was canceled at short notice a couple of weeks ago, most teams had nine games left to play. Liverpool led by 25 points ahead of Manchester City and could have secured the Premier League title two innings later.

Since then, all football in England has been postponed until further notice. Most judges believe it will be a long time before matches can be played again.

Agreement

Outwardly, the Premier League clubs hold together. Last week the message came that there was a hundred percent agreement to play the season clearly.

Without audience if required, not least considering the TV contracts that give the Premier League £ 762 million (equivalent to SEK 9.2 billion) per year.

But behind the scenes it sounds different.

Sports news site The Athletic has spoken to the chairman, club managers and other high ranking people in several Premier League clubs. One of them describes the official attitude as "embarrassing" and "unreasonable".

A senior representative of a club, who wants to remain anonymous, says it is unthinkable to play the season clearly. It is better to shut down completely and start the next season when the virus danger is over.

- It's a worldwide pandemic. We have to start all over again and there will be a few who lose out on it, Liverpool, absolutely. But on the whole, it doesn't matter. You have to start over from the beginning.

Play in September

It will take several months before the danger is over and then society and football will have to work their way through a period before series games can begin again.

- So if we're lucky, the new season can start in September, says club representative to The Athletic.

A Premier League club chairman is questioning plans to play matches without an audience. Should injured players take up places in hospitals that are full of coronary infected?

- It's so offensive that we even talk about this. It's simply not that important, he says.

He also wonders how the clubs should handle the safety. If the team plays behind closed doors, fans can still show up to the stadiums before the matches and the risk of infection can be great.

But Liverpool, are they going to lose their first title in 30 years?

- It simply doesn't matter. This is a difficult period that will leave a mark in world history. There is no place for sports and entertainment when there are really big issues to deal with, says a club representative.

On April 3, the Premier League clubs meet for a new meeting to discuss the issue. Then a message may come.
