Gonzalo Higuaín has starred in a bizarre escapade story, from Italy to Argentina, all surrounded by controversy because he left the Juventus quarantine to return home, according to various reports that appeared this Thursday in Italy.

The 32-year-old 'Albiceleste' international was in confinement like the rest of the Serie A leader's squad, after teammate Daniele Rugani tested positive for coronavirus last week.

The 'Pipita' would have asked Juventus for permission to visit his sick mother, and would have failed the COVID-19 test. The recommended period of quarantine is two weeks .

As the air connection to Argentina was cut, Higuaín arranged a private plane transfer with his family, first to France on Wednesday, and then to Spain, from where he flew to South America, Sky Sports Italia and Gazzetta Dello Sport reported. Rodrigo Bentancur, also a coronavirus negative, apparently got on the same plane as his compatriot.

German Sami Khedira and Bosnian Miralem Pjanic also reportedly left Turin to be with their families.

The Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo remains in self-isolation in Portugal, where he went to see his mother, who had suffered a stroke.

Italy is the European country hardest hit by the coronavirus, with more than 3,000 deaths.
