This week, dark headlines about the future of the five-mother were painted in Norwegian media.

- Does it have to be a five-mile in Holmenkollen? It is a long way, we must do something, said the international ski association, FIS, length manager Pierre Mignerey to Norwegian VG.

For SVT Sport, Mignerey is now developing its reasoning. He did not mean that Sunday's five miles would be the last.

- Holmenkollen's femile, together with the Tour de Ski, is the highlight of the World Cup season. So hopefully we will be able to run it in the future as well, he says.

- But of course there are challenges, we have seen that for a couple of years. We have had a low number of participants, so in order to preserve and protect this race, we must discuss what can be done.

"Extra required to win"

The big problem, according to Mignerey, is about the packed event calendar. Not all nations can afford to take part in all competitions, so they choose to run the races where they have the best chance of achieving top results.

- An alternative is to run the five miles every two years, but the five miles and three miles are classics in cross-country skiing, so I definitely want to keep them.

Daniel Rickardsson, who won the five mile in 2014, does not want to see the race removed from the program.

- This competition has so many years on the neck and it is a little extra status to win, it requires a little extra. Then I would rather think that you should review the competition program so that everyone goes instead. Limiting the number of places you compete in during the winter. The schedule is almost a little too tough, which is why many opt out.

Should there be fewer competitions?

- Yes, I would say that. Fewer competitions and maybe more competitions in the places where you are. Then you minimize travel and it becomes easier financial view for the national team and you get periods of training at home.

Today, Richardsson makes his tenth five-mile in Holmenkollen, the eleventh if you count in the 2011 World Cup.

- So it is? I did not know that. Then I have spent more or less ten years in a row. Yes, it's big. I am very much looking forward to it, it is one of the highlights of the year for me.
