• Casillas: a world champion against the system
  • Federation: Casillas announces that it will stand for election

The decision of the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to advance the presidential elections of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, scheduled for after the Olympic Games according to the Ministerial order, opens the following questions.

Who benefits the advance?

To Luis Rubiales, who has requested it. On the one hand, because there is time to mobilize and obtain support from any rival, in this case Iker Casillas, and this favors those who are already in the presidency, in daily contact with the groups on which the votes will be deposited. On the other, because it avoids the wear and tear that it could have due to the results in tournaments such as the European Championship and the Tokyo Olympics, for which football is classified.

Who hurts?

The only candidate, especially because Casillas has announced weeks ago his intention to run for election, without prior opposition work. The former international, who maintained contacts earlier this week with his agent, Carlo Cutropía , must now ratify if he maintains his intention with the new calendar.

Why is the advance granted?

According to CSD sources, to give stability to the body that aspires to boost the candidacy for the 2030 World Cup and not to make comparative grievances with other federations to which it had been granted. The Administrative Court of Sport (TAD) issued a non-binding report, in which it said the opposite, but after the arrival of the new Secretary of State, Irene Lozano , Ramón Barba , CSD's legal head, was relieved. members of the TAD. At their first meeting, after greeting each other, the new components of the court would have issued another unfavorable report, according to 'Iusport', and Lozano herself would have decided, despite this, to grant the advance.

When will the elections be?

The deadlines are very fair, since the Eurocup begins on June 12, in Rome, and Spain plays its first game, in Bilbao, on 16. The deadline would be, then, on June 11. When convened, Rubiales must resign to become a candidate.

Who vote?

The members of the Federation Assembly, elected by groups. Before the election of the president takes place, the members that will make up the body must be chosen, so these previous elections will be capital to know the possibilities that each one can have. In total, 139 members will vote. The highest number of votes is that of clubs (49), of which the professionals, favorable to Casillas, are a minority (20). In addition, 32 votes are for soccer players, 11 for referees, 16 for coaches and 12 for futsal. To all of them are added the 19 presidents of territorial federations.
