According to the VFLA Twitter account, 53 people voted for Yurchenko. Seven delegates opposed the candidate, and three abstained from voting.

Yurchenko is a member of the board of directors of the United Aircraft Corporation.

VFLA's membership in the International Association of Athletics Federations was suspended in November 2015, since then the suspension has been extended 12 times.

On November 22, 2019, it became known that World Athletics suspended the process of restoring VFLA and issuing permits for athletes to play in neutral status. This is due to the investigation of the high jumper Danil Lysenko, in which the leadership of the VFLA, in particular the resigned Dmitry Shlyakhtin, was involved.

On January 31, the Ministry of Sports temporarily, until March 1, deprived VFLA of state accreditation. Soon, the VFLA announced the dissolution of the presidium of the organization and the transfer of its authority to the working group of the ROC.

Earlier, Russian Minister of Sports Oleg Matytsin said that the future of Russian athletics depends on the election of the leadership of the VFLA.
