It is only nine years ago, 2011, that Hans Mäenpää made his debut in the Swedish ski classic. Then, almost 32 years old and with a less diverse background, he became the 310th man and created big headlines at home in the Finnish hometown of Jakobstad.

It's easy to understand why. One in sports context a totally unknown guy who grew up in a Laestadian family, held firmly under strict religious rules where the televised Vasa race was anything but available.

He broke with his family as a 20-year-old and fled to Oslo to "try everything". Hans Mäenpää describes a weekend abuse where he drank alcohol, smoked and used cocaine.

In the report Hans Mäenpää tells how he got out of the abuse and how the skiing venture took off.
