Mercedes had to face a setback on Thursday during the fifth and penultimate test day in Barcelona. Lewis Hamilton fell silent in the afternoon session due to a technical problem.

In the second sector of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Hamilton suddenly had to put his car aside in a corner. It seemed that the engine got stuck in fourth gear.

The car was immediately returned to the pit box under a black cloth, but it soon became clear that the problems with the engine could not be resolved before the end of the session at 6 p.m.

Mercedes had almost perfect test days for the time being. The German team scored by far the most laps of all teams and Valtteri Bottas clocked the fastest time with 1.15.732, the second ever in Barcelona.

Verstappen also has no flawless days

Max Verstappen only rode in the morning, but also did not have a flawless day. The Limburger of Red Bull Racing set 31 laps because the track was still wet in the first few hours and later got stuck in the gravel after a spin.

Sebastian Vettel from Ferrari was the fastest driver of the day. He completed his lap in the morning in 1.16,841, ahead of Pierre Gasly of Alpha Tauri (1.17.066, best in the afternoon) and Lance Stroll of Racing Point (1.17.188).

Nicholas Latifi from Williams was the most productive driver of the day. With 160 rounds he was behind Vettel (145 rounds) and Gasly (139 rounds). Verstappen's teammate Alexander Albon completed 61 rounds.

On Friday the final test day is scheduled with Verstappen again alone in the morning, after which the drivers prepare for the first race of the new Formula 1 season, on Sunday 15 March in Australia.
