Lewis Hamilton is in no hurry in negotiations with Mercedes for a new contract. The current commitment of the Formula 1 world champion expires at the end of this year, but the British expects it will be okay.

"I don't know when we're going to sit down and talk, but I'm not in a hurry either. I think our goals are aligned," says 35-year-old Hamilton Tuesday to Speedweek .

"We have always been very clear about our plans and have let each other know what we thought about things. Usually it is the details that matter. I am happy with this team."

According to Hamilton, the question is not whether the contract will come, but what it says. "It is more about what my next five to ten year plan is. How the decisions I make now will affect my future."

"With Mercedes I can be who I am"

The eccentric Hamilton has been driving for Mercedes since 2013. In the service of the German team, he became world champion in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and last year. He feels at home there.

"There have always been questions about my lifestyle, but everyone has seen my results in recent years. I prove time and again that my way of life is doing me good and making me an even better driver," says the Brit.

"By switching to Mercedes I could be who I wanted to be. I was not restricted or asked to speak, dress or behave in a certain way. That is often the case with other teams."

Hamilton is in preparation for the new Formula 1 season. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the last test days are scheduled in Barcelona and on March 15 the first Grand Prix is in Australia.
